Release Date: March 2, 2010
Publisher: HarperTeen
Age Group: Young Adult
Pages: 480
Overall: 5/5
Summary:

What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all—looks, popularity, the perfect boyfriend. Friday, February 12th should be just another day in her charmed life. Instead, it’s her last. The catch: Samantha still wakes up the next morning. In fact, she re-lives the last day of her life seven times, until she realizes that by making even the slightest changes, she may hold more power than she had ever imagined.

I had high expectations when I picked up this book, having heard nothing but raving reviews for it, and let me say, it does not disappoint.  This is one of those books that will change your perspective on life and really makes you realise how your actions affect others.  A stunning debut by Lauren Oliver.

The story is told from the perspective of the main character Samantha Kingston and wow, she is a bitch.  In the beginning of the book Sam is popular, self-absorbed, and just plain mean to pretty much everyone bar her three best friends Lindsay, Ally and Elody.  The interesting this about Sam is that although I could not relate to her at all, something which usually puts me off a book, Oliver's writes her as such a realistic character that I could still empathise with her and actually grew to like her.  The way not just Sam, but her friends as well, are portrayed so realistically with their flaws and insecurities, makes fall in love with each and every one of the characters.

The story itself is magnificent.  Oliver takes you through the same day 7 times and somehow manages to keep the reader interested.  I loved watching the chain of events unfold after Sam changed small details of her day each time and how each day, she, herself, changed a little bit more.  I loved Sam's relationship with each of the characters and how they also changed throughout the week; I especially loved the interaction with her little sister and also her scene with Anna in the bathroom.

The end was heartbreaking and took me completely by surprise.  I love books that inspire such an emotional reaction that they actually cause you to reflect on your own life, and this is definetly one of those books.

An amazing story, one I would recommend to everybody.  Please go pick up a copy if you haven't already done so.
